The application deadline for international and Domestic applicants is December 15th. Note that for NAMA we typically accept applications beyond the January 15 deadline.
Applicants must submit a concise statement of intent stating their academic goals, career goals, and a detailed explanation of why a graduate degree in linguistics would help them pursue these goals.
There is no length requirement. The writing sample is used to identify your level of writing proficiency and your potential as a researcher.
The GRE is optional and not required for application to the Ph.D., MS, and Joint Ph.D. Programs. It is recommended but not required, for application to the MA Program in Native American Languages and Linguistics.
English proficiency is one of the requirements for admission for all applicants whose native language is not English. Applicants must submit a minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 on the paper-based test (PB), 79 on the internet-based test (iBT), or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) composite score of 7 (no subject area below a score of 6). International students seeking graduate teaching assistantships must attain the minimum TOEFL or IELTS score listed above and in addition, must attain a score of 26 or higher on the speak portion of the TOEFL IBT.
Applicants who have completed two years of full-time academic study in the United States, English-speaking Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand or other official English-speaking countries at an accredited institution, culminating in the receipt of bachelor's or graduate degree that is awarded within two years of the term of enrollment. Students must have 48 semester graded hours of upper-division, undergraduate work, or 30 semester graded hours of graduate work. For more information, please visit this page.

No. Admissions for the Ph.D., joint Ph.D., and MS programs are for Fall enrollment only. Admissions for the MA in Native American Languages and Linguistics are for the preceding Summer.

The HLT program is for students who already have a background in linguistics or a language-related liberal arts disciplines. In addition, applicants must also have a computational background (e.g., experience and/or completed coursework in computer science, mathematics, or engineering). Applicants to the HLT program are considered on a case-by-case basis. Programming skills are an important prerequisite; studies in programming may be undertaken during the summer preceding entrance to the HLT program, if admitted.
